Portuguese Scooters

We do not rent vintage scooters because our activity’s legislation does not allow it. But we do like to remember the good old days, whenever we can!

Trying to understand the Portuguese scooter production is like to try to put together a puzzle with many parts. So this article does not mean to be a timeline or historic lesson, but only to let you know about 2 models that Portugal produced.

As far back as it goes, the first date stamp we can put on a Portuguese scooter is 1956! “Once Portugal ran on motorcycles” – says an old employer of the old legendary Famel (Fábrica de Produtos Metálicos) factory.
Between 60’s and 90’s, without access to credit in the rural areas, motorcycles were the vehicles of the people. Famel motorcycles with German Zündapp engines could be heard all over the country.
The last model ever produced by this brand was the Famel Electron – an electrical scooter! Developed for the French Mail. Without the patent for it, and the lack of regulation for electrical vehicles, the project did not succeed in Portugal.

Back in the 60’s, with a lot of pressure to produce the vehicles and engine 100% in Portugal, Engineer João Casal founded the “Casal Vehicles” factory. By the end of the decade in 1969, Casal produces its first motorcycle: a scooter. With a 50cc engine, 2 stroke, 4 speeds engine, the “Casal Carina“.

A Casal Carina. Com um motor de 50cc, 2 tempos e 4 velocidades.

St. António (13th) St. John (24th) and St. Peter (29th) are the most famous. But there is an innumerous number of sacred personalities celebrated during this month.
The reason is connected to the pagan celebrations of the Summer solstice on the 24th of June.

The first one to have the right to a celebration in Portugal is in fact Portuguese!!! Francisco Bolhão, changed his name to (brother) António after deciding to follow the religious path at the age of 20, by the end of the XII century.
Having lived in the region of Padova, in Italy, in his last years of life, he got the name “of Pádua”.

Vespa AlegriaRide Lisboa Porto Rent a Scooter

Vespa 70th Birthday

A primeira Vespa produzida (98cc) faz hoje 70 anos!

Cinco anos passados o número ascendia a 60.000!

The first Vespa (98cc) was produced 70 years ago!

As as fans we decided to look back in time to the history of this cult object.

It’s the year 1946, Italy post-Second World War II, and Piaggio company is in the middle of a crisis regarding its two airplane factories which had been bombed.

With the country on the edge of economic collapse, Rinaldo Piagio decides to turn its production operations to a vehicle which was economically accessible to the masses. He hires eng. Corradino d’Ascanio and assigns him with the task of creating a motorcycle which is easy to produce with the materials at hand.

On the first year of Production 2,284 units were sold. Five years passed the number rose to 60.000. The result is what we can see today: 170.000 units sold per year, an object that has barely suffered any changes in design and which is targeted by collectors worldwide.

Beyond material, Vespa is also a synonym for style and culture. Take for example the uprising of the mods or modernists in England 60’s: young people who showed every king of freedom and rebelion symbols, their scooter was their trademark.

So what are you waiting for? Would you like to rent a Vespa? Let us know here!

N222 AlegriaRide Rent a Scooter Lisboa Porto

N222 from Régua to Pinhão

N222 AlegriaRide Rent a Scooter Porto Lisboa

The news came out one year ago already. But it is never too late to remember.

The N222 between Régua and Pinhão is the World’s best driving road!

The study was made by Avis car rental company together with a quantum physicist and two road circuit designers. They have travelled the world looking for the best road for the common driver.

Among the key-factors “curves, acceleration, straight lines and braking” a ratio was set that would determine the quality of each road.
The ideal ratio would be 10:1, which means 10 seconds on a straight line to one second on a curve. The road between Régua and Pinhão has 27 kilometers and a outstanding 11:1, overcoming the ideal ratio and winning the prize: “World’s Best Driving Road

Add in the fact that this road is located on the famous Douro Valley about 100Km away from Porto and in a Unesco World Heritage site.
An area thoroughly known for its wines (some of them world winners too!) ant its important historic legacy.

So all the ingredients are combined for you to get ready for exploring on one of our scooters! We advise renting a 125cc scooter, like the Kymco Downtown, so that you can enjoy your ride in a comfortable and relaxed way. Book here!

Rent a Scooter Porto Cathedral

At the Cathedral of Porto

When renting a scooter in Porto , The Cathedral of Porto is worth a visit. It holds many stories and secrets!

From its foundations to the later arquitectural additions, many were the hands that built this XIIth century colossal monument on the top of Morro da Pena Ventosa.
There was a fortified wall with a perimeter of about 750 meters (built originally in the III century by romans!) which was rebuilt in the XII century having the Cathedral at its center we call that: Muralha Sueva or Primitiva. This wall was demolished during the XIX century because of the city growth. The last piece of this old wall still standing can be seen in an area called Calçada da Vandoma. You should definitely check it out! AlegriaRide Rent a Scooter Porto recommended spot!
Inside there is an altar made of silver, a masterpiece by several portuguese artits, that was kept secret by a cast wall, during the french invasions to prevent its theft. The cloister is also worth the 2,00 eur entrance.
Outside one of the features of , the Cathedral of Porto is a beautiful set of barroque arcades, by Nicolau Nasoni (yes the same that designed the Clérigos Tower!) from the XVIII century.

Don’t lose time, rent a scooter in Porto here!

Scooter Porto Catedral

Riding in from Foz to the Old Town

AlegriaRide Rent a Scooter Porto has made a clip showing the riverfront of Porto as well as the old town!

You can easily book your scooter in Porto. Contact us here!

Driving a scooter along the river and the ocean around Porto is amazing. Feeling the sea breeze on your face, seeing the people passing by, enjoying the sun… priceless! Porto city started at the northern bank of the river Douro. The first civilizations found good shelter there, from the northern winds. There are traces from the roman presence in this area and historians have dated the presence of civilazations in the Douro Valley since between the Stone and Bronze Age.
From the old town, the city’s riverfront has inumerous attractions. You will pass Miragaia, one of the four main old neighborhoods. Here you will find traditional restaurants, see how people have learned to live under the river water level (and see the floodmarks!)
Further on Passeio Alegre looks like a tropical oasis in the city. Palmtrees, the ocean right ahead,  lighthouse and markets on Saturdays! It is a mandatory stop for an icecream or a drink at any sunny terrace!
Here you will start driving along the Atlantic Ocean and the landscape will star changing. You will begin to see small beaches like Praia dos Ingleses, Praia da Luz, places where theresidents love to lie a towell down and just soak up the sun! At the end of this stretch is Matosinhos, the neighbor town of Porto, and a large sandy beach with a promenade.
If you continue driving next to the coast you will cross a bridge over to Leça da Palmeira and from here on get ready to explore the northern coast! But let’s leave that for another episode! Stay tuned for more videos.
